TIRUCHIRAPALLI : Cardinal Lawrance Picachy, president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India, said on Jan. 7 that the church could not remain a passive spectator in the face of poverty, unequal distribution of wealth, unemployment, industrial unrest and atrocities on Harijans, reports UNI. In his presidential address at the 10-day Catholic Bishops Conference of India, which began here yesterday, he said the church must be watchful to see whether the interests of the poorer groups were sufficiently protected The church had serious involvement in health and it should redouble its efforts in this direction.
