The Maharashtra RSS staged its State-level camp, attended by over 36,000 chaddi party boys. According to RSS experts the “pune show of Jan. 14-16 exceeded the Bangalore camp and thus turned out to be biggest show of RSS muscle power”.
A Swedish journalist who attended the camp said that the scene was indeed frightening. The speeches made and the arms displayed there could be interpreted as a clear warning to Muslims, Christians and even other low castes. Hinduism (Brahminism) was fast turning into fascism. The RSS symbol of Swastika was also the symbol of Hitler’s Nazi Party. Both had identical philosophy. While on one side more and more minorities, including even those in the Congress Party were coming out with the statement that the security of the minorities was threatened, RSS was launching all-out attack on minorities. S. V. Shidore’s report in the Times of India (Jan. 28) headlined “RSS camp, great morale booster”, also said that the city of Pune, the Brahmin stronghold, gave a tremendous welcome to the RSS boys. This was the first time RSS was organising such a massive show. As against 25,000 khaki-clad boys armed with lathis, 35,000 turned up and the total attendance crossed 36,000. Govt. servants, school and college teachers and even some military officers without uniform from the nearby Southern Command were said to have cooperated in making the show a success. The camp held in Bangalore held a total attendance of 25,000. At Pune, the camp was not held in city as in Bangalore, but on a hill top 10 kms away. The rostrum covered by a cobra shaped canopy, was eight metre high. A lift was arranged to reach the top. Organiser (Jan. 30) published a picture of the RSS Fuhrer, Balasaheb Deoras, addressing from the rostrum. The expenditure on the whole show might have been some millions of rupees. And RSS had never suffered for funds. India’s corrupt capitalists pour funds as they know full well that RSS alone can protect their ill-gotten wealth. The Brahmin religious leaders, their temples have kept their vast funds at the disposal of the RSS: And Govt itself is feeding the RSS through advertisements to RSS journals and buying its books. A Dalit Panther activist from Pune who got smuggled inside said that the entire top brass of the RSS were Chitpavan Brahmins headed by Prahlad Abhyankar. The Gandhi-killer Godse’s entire family attended the show and held an honoured place. The RSS leadership was busy influencing the teachers for a confrontation with the Govt. on the issue of deleting some portions in textbooks offending Muslims and Christians. Already the Govt. teachers had defied the Govt. orders and were teaching the prohibited portions in classrooms. Different political parties were also not taking a firm stand on that as the high caste Hindu leadership of these parties were one with RSS on this issue. On the basis of the secret talks inside the Pune camp our informants could make out that RSS was all set for a big confrontation with the Govt. on this issue. On one side RSS was busy wooing the Dalits by worshiping Ambedkar, but on another side it had launched a bundh against the change of name of Marathwada University. Our Dalit comrade who mingled inside also wrote that the RSS leadership had advance information about Kamalapati Tripathi, the painted Brahmin from the holy city of Banaras who was responsible for many a communal clash in UP, would be made the chief of the ruling Congress Party. They also said that RSS had a big hand in elevating him to that position. That Tripathi had been since made the congress chief confirmed the RSS role, with many of its top agents in the ruling party
