Madurai: The oppressed people of Kanya Kumari dt. of TN have been carrying on a struggle against Malayali feudalism. Through conversion to Christianity they got some security. Fishermen who constitute the largest chunk went out of the feudal structure and became Roman Catholics. The district has, therefore, a large Christian population. After ‘independence” the eyes of the RSS fell on this district. They built the Vivekananda Rock Memorial 20 years ago. This led to lot of clashes. A welcome feature of these clashes is that the oppressed castes, Chanars, both Hindu and Christian fishermen & Untouchables are on one side and the oppressors Malayali landlords, Nadar traders are on the other. The Muslims who are all petty traders are with the oppressed. Hence the RSS work in this area needs to be studied, how it has helped destroy the Left movement, how it polarised the oppressed castes and persecuted minorities, how it helped the unity of property-holders. Such a study may take six months. The thesis will be gathered by volunteers but prepared by G. Jaganathan, education officer, No.4 Gandhi Museum Orts. Madurai-625 020. All those who are having material on the RSS work and those interested in cooperating with this study may cantact Jagannathan at the above address.
