The Indian Institute of Technology (lift) has failed to adhere to the constitutional guidelines regarding the SC/ST quota for admissions to its various engineering courses. The IIT is violating the constitutional guide- lines by not allotting 22.5% of its seats each year to SC/ST candidates. The “preparatory list” system being followed by the IIT under which all SC/ST candidates, who are selected each year through the entrance test, are made to study the 10+2 subjects for another year followed by another process of elimination – “is nothing but a joke being perpetrated on the Indian Constitution in order to befool the entire SC/ST community”. The National Commission for SC/ST has issued a show- cause notice to the IIT management.
