Colombo: The 10th World General Assembly of the Motamar, the World Muslim Congress, got off to a quiet start here on Sept. 28 with a call for a new world order, universal peace and war against poverty.
There was also the clear assertion that the voice of the Muslims, who constitute 23% of the world population, cannot be ignored, Leaders of the Congress were categorical in their denouncement of the western media for “motivated and mischievous propaganda against Islam”. The conference president, Dr. Abdullah Bin Omar Naseef, regretted that Islam was being misunderstood and misrepresented”, especially by the media. Dr. Naseef attributed most of the problems facing society to the unfair distribution of wealth and the imbalances created by it. Hence the theme of new world order for this conference.
