New Delhi: Any team of Amnesty International, (Al) a London-based organization which monitors violations of human rights all over the world and has consultative status with the United Nations, will not be allowed to visit Punjab for the time being, though its teams would be free to visit other Indian states.
This has been conveyed by Union Home Minister S.B. Chavan to his British counterpart, Kenneth Clarke, when the latter visited New Delhi last week to discuss bilaterial issues. This is proof enough, if one is needed, that the Indian government has a lot to hide in the strife torn and unfortunate state. Fistulate clean and there has been no police repression, then it should have no hesitation in allowing any team visit the state and see fins for itself. (Spokesman Jan 18 ’93)
