Calcutta: Afraid of Dalit-Muslim unity, the traditional Dalit mobilisation and social equation, Mamata Banerjee suddenly met Jyoti Basu for peace on Nandigram on June 4. A convention to say no to SEZ brought tens of thousands of Muslims in Calcutta on June 3 with Dalits.
This is a red alert for the ruling Brahminical classes in Bengal. Mamata and Mahashweta are both Brahmins. Upper castes are not interested in any social change resulting in the annihilation of Brahminism.
Dalit leaders addressing Sunday convention said political parties are misusing Muslims and Dalits for political gains. They are used for Nandigram but are detached from every Dalit and Muslim issue.
Meanwhile, the Nandigram resistance stands divided. Sidkullaha Chowdhari and his Gana Unnayan O Jana Adhikar Manch organised the June 3 convention to say no to SEZ did not invite Mamata.
No Calcutta “intellectual” including Mahashweta Devi spearheading the resistance participated the convention attended by CPIML, CPIML-PCC, SUCI and a host of mass organizations.
