Your “debate” on the Jamate-Islami is becoming interesting. This is with reference to Syed Asif Ali’s defence of the Jamat (DV Oct 16 p10).
I can say that what Iqbal Ahmed Shariff wrote (DV Aug. 16) is exactly right.
Syed Asif Ali in his admiration for Jamate-Islami is overlooking the realities. The Jamate-Islami has only a two-point agenda: (1) politics and (2) history.
Asif Ali says the Jamat is only following the rules of Koran and Sunnah. If so, why it opposes President H.M. Irshad in declaring Bangladesh as an Islamic state? Why it opposed Ziaul Haque in introducing Shariat law in Pakistan?
It opposed Zia and Irshad because it does not want non-Jamate-Isimai rule over Pakistan and Bangladesh. It thinks that only it has the right to rule over these countries.
Similarly, the Hindu nazi parties are using the name of Rama, their Aryan god, to get power in India. The Jamate-Islami is using the name of Rahim to get involved in Indian politics. These few points are enough to say that the Jamate-Islami is only trying for political gain and not concerned with the plight and persecution of the oppressed Muslims.
