The conference in Durban has two parts. The first is the NGO conference from Aug.27 to Sept.2 and the inter-governmental meet from Aug.31 to Sept.7. About 160 participants from all over the country, who have been working on caste and discrimination issues are participating in these meetings in Durban. It is a historic meeting as this is the first time that the issue of discrimination against Dalits has become a global issue. Though India has been a champion of human rights issues globally and at the UN, it has been practicing blatant racism at home and at the same time putting a false face to outsiders.
