WASHINGTON: The World Bank, in its 1981 world development report, places India among the 11 poorest nations in the world. The rankings based on per capita gross national product (GNP), put, Bhutan as the poorest country with a GNP of 80 for each of its 1.3 million citizens. Bangladesh was second poorest, followed by Chad, Ethiopia, Nepal, Mali, Burma Upper Volta and India.
