Bijapur: The motive behind the brutal murder of five brothers and their friend at Hinahalli village, ten kms from here, on the night of Sept. 20 was caste. The love affair between a Dalit, who was one of the victims, and Suneeta, a Hindu, seems to be the most likely cause. The romance between Suresh (21) and Suneeta (18) began about four years ago while both of them were in school. It continued after Suneeta Chitahuri had passed her SSLC, while Suresh moved on to the junior college. According to Miss Kamla Jamadar, a close relative of the Alwar’s, who related the story to this correspondent, Suneeta frequently met Suresh, must have been infuriating enough for Suneeta’s kin to take revenge.
Tipanna Alwar, father of the deceased, was injured in the attack. He gave the names of 41 suspects, adding that several others were brought from outside the village to strengthen their evil designs.
Yamnawa, widow of Pratapa Alwar, said Vithappa Govind Appa Gol, Jyoti be Chavan Sheku Choudhari and many others had surrounded the hotel. Armed with axes, sickles and lathis they set fire to the hotel and forced the inmates out. When Rawat Appa emerged he was attacked and his legs were chopped off. (Times of India, Sept. 29).
