Bangalore: The first Dalit chief of the University Grants Commission (UGC), a JNU Professor, S.K. Thorat, is in trouble. As long as the sympathetic Arjun Singh was the Union HRD Minister, the Dalit UGC chief was protected. Now that Kapil Sibal has taken over, a dismissed Brahmin secretary of the UGC, Raju Sharma, has gone to the Vigilance Commission which has registered a case on misuse of funds in the Rs. 224-crore E-Governance project.
Besides, the Govt. has also discovered a
big racket in recklessly granting “deemed university” status to many colleges all over the country.
Thorat is the author of the book, Dalits in India, 2009, Sage, (DV April 1, 2009, p.28).
Meanwhile, a Dalit Pune University Vice-Chancellor and a former Reserve Bank executive, Narendra Jadhav, is elevated member of the Planning Commission because he is a favorite of the Brahminical Social Order.
