Ahmednagar: Nearly 3,000 Christians took to the streets in Ahmednagar on Nov. 13 in protest against Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackerary’s bid to “reconvert” a number of Christians to Hinduism.
He addressed a big meeting but his “mass conversion” failed as only Balasaheb Gaikwad, author of the controversial Marathi book, Christi Mahar, embraced Hinduism. The book has created an uproar in the area for the past few months because of its portrayal of the “plight” of Christians from the Mahar and Mang communities and its critcism of Catholic priests exploiting them. (Times of India, Nov. 17).
Untouchables (Mahars and Maangs) are not Hindus, and never Hindus. Because of the upper caste (Hindu) domination in church, the converted Dalits persecuted inside the church have played into Hindu nazi hands. It is a jump from frying pan into fire – EDITOR.
