Bombay: A true story, stranger than fiction: A mob attacks a building, intent on murderous destruction. Fire bombs and brickbats fly through the air. Apertometer building catches fire. A concerned citizen calls the fire brigade and the following conversation ensues:
“Please rush, there’s building on fire at… and mobs are attacking it’.
“Who is being attacked? Which community?”
“There are Muslims in the building”
‘Goondas’.
“Which community?”
“They look like Sainiks”
“Theek hai, jalne do, Koi bachega to hum usko
Pakistan bhej dega’”. End of the conversation.
This is not a rumour, this actually happened. To someone I know and trust. Last week. In Bombay. (Telegraph, Jan. 20). Where are we going at this rate? Are all the sane people dead in India?
