Bombay: The Catholic church has demanded an unconditional apology from several newspapers, including The Times of India, for allegedly publishing “false and unfounded allegations on the character and life-style” of two nuns who were murdered at Jogeshwari last November. The newspapers had published reports that the autopsies on the bodies of the two nuns had revealed sexual activity on their part and that one of them was even suspected to be suffering from a sexually-transmitted disease (STD). The reports had caused a furor in a section of the Catholic community. A month later, on Dec. 15, when the forensic laboratory and histopathology reports were available, the police issued a press release that no evidence of venereal disease was found. “Questions are being asked as to how the press learnt of the post-mortem findings the day they were performed and before a signed report had officially gone to the police.
